About Jan Kailuweit

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO SOLVE SALEM’S URGENT ISSUES

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, LOCAL SERVICE

Originally from Germany, Jan Kailuweit (pronounced “Yan”) came to the United States in 1999 and has lived in Ward 1 since that time. He brings a global perspective to local politics. Kailuweit’s experience includes five years on the City of Salem Budget Committee, including as vice-chair and chair. He has also served on the board of the Grant Neighborhood Association and the Salem Public Library Advisory Board. Kailuweit became a U.S. citizen in 2004. He holds a Masters in Management from Southern Oregon University and has worked for the State of Oregon in various policy positions. He lives in Salem with his wife, Kim, and son.

Jan's mission and vision

I stand for collaboration and creative solutions that go beyond progressive and conservative labels. I will champion thoughtful decisions as I have for five years on Salem’s budget committee—by listening, asking tough questions, and making decisions with Salem’s families and future in mind.

Focusing on
livability

  • Helping our downtown small businesses bounce back from the coronavirus crisis
  • Housing homeless residents through creative partnerships and new solutions
  • Encouraging downtown revitalization and historic preservation while promoting affordable housing
  • Promoting a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly city
  • Taking care of our public parks and greenspaces

Homelessness
Restoring Salem’s Dignity

  • Homelessness is a crisis and we must prioritize our budget around it.
  • Experts tell us we need around 250 more no-barrier temporary shelter beds, and around 500 new affordable housing units. We must direct money toward additional services like a navigation center, a mobile response unit, and mental health services. We must also give our law enforcement the tools they need to ensure our sidewalks are safe and clean.
  • I want to bring state and local government, the non-profit and business communities together in a coordinated effort to help our most vulnerable get off the streets and back on their feet.

Addressing Climate Change by Building the Bridge

  • We are expecting 60,000 new residents to Salem by 2035. We must be planning for that growth by building another traffic bridge into West Salem. Without it, those in need of first responder services are put at risk and our economy will slow.
  • By building the bridge, Salem can do our part to address climate change. By decreasing time cars are idling in traffic we can decrease our carbon emissions.
